Google Commits $10B to Data Center Expansion in Andhra Pradesh
Google is making a strategic $10 billion bet on India's digital infrastructure with a new data center cluster in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. The investment, channeled through subsidiary Raiden Infotech India Ltd., represents the single largest foreign direct investment since India's economic reforms, according to Chief Minister Chandrababu Naidu.
The project will feature three high-capacity submarine cables with dedicated landing stations, complementing Andhra Pradesh's ambitious plan to develop 6GW of data center capacity by 2029. "This isn't just about job creation," said IT Minister Nara Lokesh. "The Ripple effects across our economy will be transformative."
Google's expansion comes as India emerges as a critical node in global data infrastructure. The Visakhapatnam facility will become Google's largest Asian data center, joining its existing network of 29 sites across 11 countries. The December 2024 memorandum of understanding followed months of negotiations over infrastructure requirements and regulatory considerations.
